Senator says he won't support Trump's Federal Reserve nominee
WASHINGTON (TNND) — North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis said Friday morning that he would not be supporting Kevin Warsh to succeed Jerome Powell as Federal Reserve chairman.
“My position has not changed: I will oppose the confirmation of any Federal Reserve nominee, including for the position of Chairman, until the DOJ’s inquiry into Chairman Powell is fully and transparently resolved,” Tillis wrote in a post on X.
Tillis said that he thinks Warsh is a qualified nominee, but protecting the independence of the Federal Reserve is important.
“Kevin Warsh is a qualified nominee with a deep understanding of monetary policy,” he said.
“However, the Department of Justice continues to pursue a criminal investigation into Chairman Jerome Powell based on committee testimony that no reasonable person could construe as possessing criminal intent. Protecting the independence of the Federal Reserve from political interference or legal intimidation is non-negotiable.”
Trump announced Friday that he would be nominating former Federal Reserve Gov. Warsh to be the next Fed chair.
Current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s term expires in May.
"I have known Kevin for a long period of time, and have no doubt that he will go down as one of the GREAT Fed Chairmen, maybe the best,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “On top of everything else, he is ‘central casting,’ and he will never let you down.”
Trump has criticized Powell in the past for not lowering interest rates fast enough.
"The guy is just incompetent," Trump said of Powell last month. "There is nothing you can do about it. He's just a very incompetent man, but we're probably going to bring a lawsuit against him."
