Rep. Luna says if government shuts down, SAVE Act will be needed to re-open it
WASHINGTON (TNND) — Florida GOP Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna said Thursday that if Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer shuts the government down, the only way it will re-open is if the SAVE Act passes.
“I have received a phone call from another Republican member who has stated that they will back us in our efforts at attaching the SAVE Act to any piece of legislation that Schumer sends back to the House,” she wrote on X.
“If Schumer shuts the government down, the price to reopen will be the SAVE Act.”
Last week, Luna threatened to shut down the floor of the House if the Senate didn’t pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act).
The legislation requires proof of U.S. citizenship when individuals register to vote in federal elections.
Senate Democrats voted Thursday to block legislation that would have funded the Department of Homeland Security as both parties attempt to negotiate to avoid another government shutdown.
If Congress doesn’t pass a budget to fund the government, a partial government shutdown could happen Jan. 31.
Luna said that even if the government stayed open, she would still force the Senate to vote on the SAVE Act.
“The SAVE Act on election integrity is one of the most important things to secure our elections,” her post concluded. “This is a non-negotiable.”
