Police investigate 'whites only' graffiti on North Portland apartment door as bias crime

Video from the victim also shows a man banging on the door

The Portland Police Bureau is investigating a potential bias crime after officers discovered the words "whites only" written on the door of an apartment in North Portland.

The incident began when a man, captured on cell phone video, was seen knocking on the victim's door.

The victim told KATU the suspect "had written in white Sharpie, 'whites only' on our door. And obviously I am white but my partner is not."

The victim, who wished to remain anonymous when speaking with KATU News, described the suspect as wearing a hoodie and attempting to forcefully open the door.

The situation escalated after the suspect returned ten minutes later with a blow torch, prompting the victim and his partner to call 911. "I was having an anxiety attack immediately," the victim said, citing his PTSD.

“My voice was trembling on the phone with officers,” he said. “And he had written in white Sharpie, 'whites only' on our door. And obviously I am white but my partner is not."

The incident is being investigated as a possible bias crime. Bias crime is the term given to hate crimes under Oregon Law.

The victim, who recently moved to Portland, expressed shock at the incident. "We had felt super safe in the city so far. And this was just like a complete slap in the face."

Police said they were unable to locate the suspect, although they passed a man fitting the description as they arrived.

Video provided by the victim, who did not want to be identified, appears to show a man using a blow torch.

The victim and his partner are now fearful of returning home, with the victim urging, "I want people to figure out who he is. I don't want him to keep terrorizing people."

The investigation is ongoing.
