Fed Chair Powell to appear at Supreme Court hearing in Lisa Cook firing case

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is expected to attend Supreme Court oral arguments Wednesday in a case involving the attempted firing of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, an unusual and highly visible show of support from the central bank’s top official.

The Supreme Court is considering whether President Donald Trump has the authority to remove Cook from her post. The case centers on Trump’s effort to fire Cook, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden. Powell plans to attend the arguments in person, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Powell’s appearance marks a more public display of support for Cook than he has previously shown. Trump first moved to fire Cook in late August, a step that would be unprecedented in the Fed’s history.

The development follows Powell’s announcement last week that the Trump administration had issued subpoenas to the Federal Reserve. Powell said those subpoenas raised the possibility of an unprecedented criminal indictment of a sitting Fed chair.

In a video statement released Jan. 11, Powell condemned the subpoenas, calling them “pretexts” and accusing the Trump administration of attempting to pressure the central bank into sharply cutting its benchmark interest rate.
