Northern lights could be visible tonight in Southern New England

The Northern Lights could be visible Monday night across Southern New England as a blast of solar energy impacts Earth. A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) struck Earth's atmosphere on Monday afternoon, triggering a geomagnetic storm a little earlier than expected.
- See the Northern Lights? Chime In!
This significant solar storm is already underway, which means the Northern Lights could be visible as soon as it gets dark. Anytime the "k-index" (a measure of the solar storm's strength) gets above a 7, we have a chance to see the Northern Lights. The k-index has already reached an 8 as of late Monday afternoon.

Although this is a significant solar storm, it's not a guarantee we'll be able to see the Northern Lights. The best chance will be away from city lights. Cloud cover is expected to decrease later this evening, which could allow for a better chance to see the Aurora. Bundle up if you're headed outside, it will be cold with lows in the teens overnight!
