Providence police said Friday that a patient at Butler Hospital assaulted staff members and injured a police officer.

Police said they were called to Butler at about 8 p.m. for a report of a patient assaulting hospital staff.

NBC 10's Ryan Medeiros reports that a patient at Butler Hospital is accused of attacking three staffers and a police officer.

They said the patient became combative and charged at an officer, who fell and struck his head on the ground.

Police said the officer had a head injury and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. He was conscious and alert.

They said two additional rescues responded to treat Butler Hospital staff members who were also injured. A Butler spokeswoman said three staff members were hurt.

Police said the assailant was taken into custody.

They said there was no ongoing threat to the hospital or the public.
