One of the country's major cell phone providers reported that an outage was fixed on Wednesday night after customers went hours without service.

"The outage has been resolved. If customers are still having an issue, we encourage them to restart their devices to reconnect to the network," Verizon wrote in an update on X. "For those affected, we will provide account credits. Details will be shared directly with customers. We sincerely apologize for the disruption."

Verizon updated its customers late on Wednesday, saying, "Today, we let many of our customers down and for that, we are truly sorry. They expect more from us. We are working non-stop and making progress. Our teams will continue to work through the night until service is restored for all impacted customers. We will make this right - for any customer affected, we will provide account credits and share updates soon.”

Verizon subscribers took to social media to complain that their phones were left without service and that they were unable to make phone calls, with some noting the phones were "stuck in SOS mode."

DownDetector showed a large spike in reported issues just after 12 p.m. EST on Wednesday. An outage heat map shows at least 175,000 customers impacted in larger clusters of outages in big cities like Chicago, New York and Atlanta.

DownDetector shared on X that the outage surpassed 1 million reports on the platform.

According to the outage tracking website, other U.S. mobile companies are experiencing varying levels of outages, including AT&T, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular.

Verizon is responding to users on social media, noting it was aware of an issue impacting "wireless voice and data services" for some customers.

In an updated statement just after 4 p.m. EST, Verizon said its engineering teams are "on the ground" working to fix the service issue.

Verizon's team is on the ground actively working to fix today’s service issue that is impacting some customers. We know this is a huge inconvenience, and our top priority is to get you back online and connected as fast as possible. We appreciate your patience while we work to resolve this issue.

Sinclair asked Verizon a series of questions related to the outlet, but received the same statement being shared by Verizon Support on social media.

  • What can you tell us about the outage affecting Verizon Wireless customers?
  • What time did the outage start?
  • What caused it?
  • How long will it take to fix?
  • How many customers are affected?
  • Did the phones for everyone affected go into SOS mode?

"We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience," the company responded.
