A Warren teacher was charged with simple assault following an investigation into an incident that happened at Portsmouth Middle School.
Portsmouth police said they received a report alleging that a 12-year-old middle school student was assaulted in Oct. 2025 by a teacher during class.
The teacher, identified as 62-year-old Kevin Reilly of Warren, reportedly grabbed the student's arm and twisted it behind their back while seated at a desk.
Police then interviewed students who had witnessed the alleged incident.
An affidavit arrest warrant was then issued.
Police said Reilly turned himself into police custody on Friday, Jan. 23.
He was arraigned and released on $1,000 personal recognizance with a condition of having no contact with the victim.
Reilly is scheduled to be formally arraigned on Thursday, Jan. 29.
Portsmouth Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Viveiros sent NBC 10 the following statement regarding the arrest:
"Portsmouth School Department is aware of the recent arrest of a district employee by the Portsmouth Police Department. When concerns were first brought to our district in mid December, PSD immediately initiated an internal review and followed all required protocols, including making a report to the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), and notifying PPD. The district took the matter seriously and acted in accordance with our policies and state reporting requirements. The safety and well-being of our students remains our highest priority. PSD will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and any appropriate agencies. Given that the current matter is now part of an active investigation being handled by law enforcement, we defer to PPD for further information."
