East Providence Police Chief Michael Rapoza was sworn in Tuesday night.
Rapoza had been serving as acting chief since June.
He took over for former chief Christopher Francesconi after he retired in April.
Rapoza first joined the department in 2005 and was assigned to the patrol division.
He served as a patrol officer until being transferred to the Special Investigations Unit in 2014.
