Trump has a 2-hour meeting with Noem following pushback on Minnesota shooting
WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump had a two-hour meeting with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Monday evening amid the backlash of the most recent Minnesota shooting.
Noem specifically requested to see the president, according to a report from The New York Times.
While Noem’s job isn’t at risk, the meeting is reportedly a sign that Trump isn’t happy with how his administration handled the death of Alex Pretti, who was shot by immigration agents.
Pretti was killed while protesting Trump’s immigration policies. Trump said his administration was reviewing the incident, but criticized Pretti for bringing a gun to the protest.
Border Czar Tom Homan arrived in Minnesota Monday night and is expected to meet with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Tuesday.
Trump said that he spoke with Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Frey on Monday and progress was made.
Frey said that he appreciated the conversation with the president, but "expressed how much Minneapolis has benefited from our immigrant communities and was clear that my main ask is that Operation Metro Surge needs to end."
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that Homan would be managing the on-the-ground ICE operations in Minnesota going forward.
Trump clarified Tuesday that Noem would not be stepping down after a reporter asked if she was.
"No," Trump answered. "I think she's doing a very good job. The border is totally secure."
According to CNN, Trump was not pleased with how Noem handled the situation with Pretti’s death on social media.
