Trump demands Congress end sanctuary cities amid rising ICE tensions

WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump is calling on Congress to pass legislation which will abolish sanctuary cities and is demanding that every Democratic governor and mayor work with his administration as it carries out its immigration enforcement agenda.
Trump’s lengthy Truth Social post on Sunday night comes as tensions escalate between anti-ICE protesters and federal immigration enforcement agents in the wake of Alex Pretti’s death over the weekend. Pretti is the second United States citizen to be killed by an ICE agent in Minnesota in just the past few weeks.
Trump blamed Democrat leadership, particularly Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, for failing to “stoke the flames of Division, Chaos, and Violence,” which he said ultimately lead to the deaths of Pretti and Renee Good.
“Democrat run Sanctuary Cities and States are REFUSING to cooperate with ICE, and they are actually encouraging Leftwing Agitators to unlawfully obstruct their operations to arrest the Worst of the Worst People!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“By doing this, Democrats are putting Illegal Alien Criminals over Taxpaying, Law-Abiding Citizens, and they have created dangerous circumstances for EVERYONE involved.”
In a subsequent post, Trump made a list of demands on Democratic leadership including demanding Walz and Frey turn over all illegal aliens currently incarcerated, with an active warrant, or arrested by state and local law enforcement. He also requested that local police work with federal law enforcement “in apprehending and detaining Illegal Aliens who are wanted for Crimes.”
“Democrat Politicians must partner with the Federal Government to protect American Citizens in the rapid removal of all Criminal Illegal Aliens in our Country. Some Democrats, in places like Memphis, Tennessee, or Washington, D.C., have done so, resulting in safer streets for ALL,” Trump wrote.
Trump said all of his “requests are rooted in COMMON SENSE” and will ensure that Americans stay safe.
“The Trump Administration is standing by, and waiting for ANY Democrat to do the right thing, and work with us on these important matters of MAKING AMERICA SAFE like it is in all sections of our Country where we are, together with Local Leadership, participating and involved,” Trump wrote.
However, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara told CBS’ “Face The Nation” that “it’s not on the Minneapolis Police Department or local law enforcement to hand folks over that are in jails.”
“The city police do not operate a jail that’s at the county level and the prisons are at the state level, so we are complying with the law as we have been for many years,” O’Hara host Margaret Brennan on Sunday. “And I don’t know what else could possibly be asked of this very, very, you know, understaffed and overstretched police department.”
