PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y. (WKRC) - A nurse who had been working with a 5-year-old child for more than three years was arrested after the boy's parents allegedly found surveillance video showing the nurse hitting the child.

The Suffolk County Police Department announced on January 15 that 31-year-old Bruno Valenzuela had been arrested after he "aggressively" slapped a 5-year-old child with cerebral palsy on the back and chest, leaving the boy with bruises.

The crime was discovered by the child's parents, who checked their security cameras after discovering their child's bruises and taking him to the hospital on December 22, two days after the attack took place, according to Greater Long Island.

Watch the security camera video below:

The victim's family expressed their shock at Valenzuela's actions, saying that he had worked with their child for three years and was "like part of the family."

Camille Harlow, director of Christian Nursing Registry, where the victim's family discovered Valenzuela, said she was "horrified" upon hearing the news.

"It's never happened - nothing like this in 38 years," she said. "We are a pediatric agency..."

Harlow said that upon reviewing older surveillance video there were no other signs of abuse, and that the company believes Valenzuela "just snapped."

Valenzuela was charged with endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person and endangering the welfare of a child.
