UPDATE: While previous reports from the Sheriff's Office suggested the shooting stemmed from a Facebook Marketplace meetup, the Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that new information disproves that scenario.

Four people were shot Sunday afternoon after an alleged online marketplace transaction turned into a violent ambush in Fort Pierce, according to detectives.

The shooting occurred at 1:15 p.m. on the 3600 block of Avenue R in Fort Pierce in front of a vacant house, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office.

Upon arrival, deputies secured the scene and rendered aid to the victims in coordination with St. Lucie County Fire Rescue.

A preliminary investigation revealed the incident may have begun as an attempted online marketplace transaction.

Investigators say they believe an individual arrived at the address for the purpose of buying an item, but was instead ambushed by three suspects who opened fire.

Four shooting victims have been identified and transported to the hospital for treatment, per deputies.

As the investigation progressed, detectives and crime scene investigators recovered two firearms in the area of the incident.

As investigative efforts continued into the night, detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the 1900 block of North 37th Street, identified as the location where one of the involved shooters fled following the incident. During the search, detectives collected additional evidence and recovered multiple firearms, including one possibly involved in the shooting, from inside the residence.

Deputies are looking for a fifth individual who may have been involved.

Undersheriff John Bolduc told CBS12 News that two victims are currently in surgery, two others are scheduled for surgery Monday, and one suspect could potentially be at large based on witness accounts.

Detectives will continue to follow up on the investigation and conduct additional interviews, including with individuals who were unable to be interviewed earlier due to their injuries and ongoing medical treatment.

"This wasn't a random thing. This was a robbery of a transaction gone bad," Undersheriff Bolduc said. "There's a lot of shell casings on the ground and we're still finding shell casings in the grass around that particular area."

Bolduc said that witnesses were outside when the shooting happened and that they were uninjured.

Criminal Investigations Division detectives have reportedly taken over the investigation.

This is a developing story. CBS12 News will provide updates as they are made available.
