Governor Walz calls for removal of 'untrained agents' following fatal shooting
(TNND) — Following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti on Saturday by a U.S. border patrol agent in Minneapolis, Democrats are calling for federal immigration officers to leave the state of Minnesota.
The shooting has increased tensions as protesters gather on the frigid streets continuing to clash with federal officers and demanding that they leave the state.
A federal judge issued an order blocking the Trump administration from “destroying or altering evidence” related to Saturday’s shooting, after state and county officials issued a lawsuit.
The lawsuit filed by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is meant to preserve evidence collected by federal officials that state authorities have not yet been able to inspect. A court hearing is scheduled for Monday and will take place in a federal court in St. Paul.
A full, impartial, and transparent investigation into his fatal shooting at the hands of DHS agents is non-negotiable,” Ellison said in a statement.
According to Drew Evans, the superintendent of the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which investigates police shootings, federal officers blocked his agency from the scene of the shooting on Saturday.
However on Sunday morning, bureau officers were allowed and working on the scene.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said Sunday morning during an interview that "it’s back to just the Minneapolis police responding to calls."
O'Hara also said he saw no evidence that Pretti brandished the pistol.
During a Sunday press conference, Border Patrol commanderatlarge Gregory Bovino rejected a reporter’s claim—based on circulating videos—that an officer left the struggle with the weapon taken from Pretti before shots were fired, calling it “speculation.”
Many videos out there, many different accounts that you may see, that I may see, that anybody here may see, that, folks, is why we have something called an investigation, to take what you're talking about, to take those videos, to take witness statements, to take officer statements, all those minute details that will paint a true picture of what really happened," Bovino said. "That is why we investigate, so we can get to the truth, so there's not speculation.
Bovino also referred to Pretti and Renee Good, who was shot by a federal official earlier this month as "suspects" during the press conference.
Two suspects have been shot," Bovino said. "And suspects that assault, delay, obstruct or threaten a law enforcement officer's life when individuals make poor choices, poor decisions, come into a law enforcement situation, an active law enforcement situation, conspire to come into that situation, whether that's based on ideology, we don't know. That'll be in the investigation that we just talked about."
The Department of Homeland Security said that Pretti had a handgun and “violently resisted” when agents tried to disarm him, leading to the fatal shooting. State and local officials have continually disputed that claim.
On Saturday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said the videos show that account to be “nonsense and lies.”
Bovino said he is “not blaming the Border Patrol Agents,” during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.
The victims are the Border Patrol agents,” Bovino said. “The suspect put himself in that situation.
During a Sunday press conference, Walz pleaded to President Donald Trump asking "what's the plan?" as he urged Trump to pull the "untrained agents" out of the state "before they kill another person."
What do we need to do to get these federal agents out of our state? If fear, violence and chaos is what you wanted from us, then you clearly underestimated the people of this state and nation. We are tired, but we're resolved. We're peaceful, but we'll never forget. We're angry, but we won't give up hope. And above all else, we are clearly unified," Walz said.
Large demonstrations have continued in Minneapolis' Government Plaza in protest of ICE despite below zero temperatures.
