PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — Rhode Island leaders and local officials celebrated the completion of the I-95 Providence Viaduct Northbound Project on Friday.
The completion ceremony was held at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium overlooking I-95.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation said it replaced a nearly 1,300-foot long viaduct that was classified as structurally deficient.
“The completion of the I-95 Providence Viaduct Northbound Project is a major milestone for Rhode Island,” said Gov. Dan McKee. “This investment strengthens one of the state’s most critical pieces of infrastructure, improves safety, and ensures this corridor will serve Rhode Islanders for decades to come. I thank Rhode Island’s congressional delegation for their support in securing the federal funding that made this project possible.”

In addition to replacing the viaduct, RIDOT officials said they also replaced 10 bridges, constructed a new service road along the right side of the interstate and established express lanes for I-95 north.
According to RIDOT, the service road has made a significant positive impact on congestion and traffic times.
