Plymouth District Attorney Tim Cruz said the man who is accused of fatally shooting two people at a birthday party in Carver was held without bail on Tuesday.

According to officials, 23-year-old Nicholas Meuse faces various charges including two counts each of murder, attempted murder and armed assault murder.

He was arraigned in Wareham District Court where he was held without bail pending a probable cause hearing, authorities said.

Officials said Meuse is scheduled for that hearing on Feb. 25.

Last Saturday, Carver police responded to 53 Silva St., the Saint John the Baptist Club, where a child’s birthday party was taking place, officials said.

The district attorney’s office said two people, 27-year-old Benjamin Cowart and 20-year-old Jalen Lina, died from the shooting.

Two more people, a 28-year-old man and 32-year-old man, were taken to hospitals for their injuries.

According to officials, Meuse was arrested in the woods near where the shooting took place.

Police said Meuse had called 911 after the shooting and told the dispatchers he was the shooter.

In an interview with officers, Meuse said he was invited to the party by a relative, officials said. He said he had pre-existing conflicts with some of the attendees.

Tensions flared up at the party, and it led to the shooting, he told authorities.

“While claimed to have seen one of the attendees reach for their waistband immediately before the incident, investigation only found a single gun – a 9-milimeter firearm with an obliterated serial number-at the scene,” the district attorney’s office said in a release.
