Providence Mayor Brett Smiley is warning residents of a parking ban and adjusted city services over the weekend, ahead of extreme cold and expected snow accumulation.

"The cleanup from this storm will take some time," he said.

The City of Providence Public Works Department prepared 63 plows and 5,000 tons of salt for the weekend weather events.

According to Mayor Smiley, residents who park on the street can expect to move their cars to one of the 16 approved citywide parking sites, recently announced to assist during weather-related parking bans.

While a parking ban is expected, the mayor says official plans won't be released until Saturday or Sunday.

"The balance is to try to give people as much notice as possible, but also understand and expect that there are still many events happening in the city on Saturday night," said Mayor Smiley.

The Mayor also said residents who usually get their trash picked up Monday should wait an extra day to put their bins out. Trash pick-up is set to resume Tuesday.

Without significant wind in the forecast, most residents should have power through the weekend.

"We're hopeful that there will not be widespread outages," said Mayor Smiley.

The Mayor was unable to provide an update on school closures as of Friday, but said he's in communication with the Providence Schools Superintendent..
