'Star Search' returns: Netflix drops trailer for reimagined live talent competition

“Star Search” is officially returning, and it’s bringing major star power center stage.
The iconic talent competition, which helped launch the careers of Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Dave Chappelle, is making its long-awaited comeback after 20 years off the air.
The newly released trailer dropped on Jan. 16, with host Anthony Anderson building the anticipation, saying, “the greatest talent competition ever is back.”
"And the world's next superstar is waiting to be crowned," the judges tease in the trailer. Country hitmaker Jelly Roll, actress Sarah Michelle Gellar and model-author Chrissy Teigen will serve as judges.

The format blends nostalgia with a modern twist, hinted at with the tagline, “Whose star will rise? You help decide.” Viewers watching live can vote in real-time using their remote or through the Netflix mobile app, helping decide which contestants advance each week.
The new “Star Search” spotlights up-and-coming performers across multiple categories, including music, dance, comedy, magic, variety, and juniors. Contestants will face off head-to-head, with weekly eliminations designed to keep the stakes high and the momentum building throughout the season.

Produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, the powerhouse behind “Rhythm + Flow,” the Primetime Emmys, and the Super Bowl Halftime Show, the revival promises a polished, high-energy show. Taraji P. Henson, Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, Madison Merritt, Elaine Metaxas, and Steve Mosko executive produce, with “America’s Got Talent” alum Jason Raff and “Bring the Funny” veteran David Friedman serving as showrunners.
With its interactive voting, star-studded panel, and deep-rooted legacy, the “Star Search” revival aims to please longtime fans while introducing a whole new generation to the thrill of discovering the next big stars. The original “Star Search” premiered in 1983 and ran until 1995, followed by a brief return from 2003 until 2004.
The reimagined series debuts on January 20, kicking off a five-week live event with new episodes airing Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
