“Well, let’s put it this way. I haven’t thought about retirement,” he told PEOPLE before joking, “Somebody at NBC, that might be a different story.”

Roker, who has been a journalist on the show since replacing Willard Scott in 1996, explained why he’s still passionate about his job after all these years.

“I love what I do,” he said. “I feel good. I love this job. I love doing it. At some point, I guess I won’t be, but I don’t feel like that’s anytime soon, so I’m just gonna keep going.”

The beloved journalist also reflected on his most memorable encounters on the show, saying he’s been “really, really fortunate” to be able to stay with NBC, where he frequently interviews the biggest stars in showbiz. The Queens,NY native says he has had many pinch-me moments throughout his career that would make his late parents proud – but one stands out above the rest.

During the 2013 inauguration of President Barack Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden, Roker remembers the moment he met the former presidents.

“[Obama] acknowledged when I asked him about the weather, and then Vice President Biden runs up and shakes my hand,” Roker recalled. “It was the day of the inaugural, but it also happened to be a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. I’m thinking my parents are looking down and going, ‘Our son was acknowledged by the President of the United States and had his hand shaken by the Vice President.’ Like I said, for a kid from Queens, that’s some pretty heavy stuff.”

While we don’t anticipate Roker stepping away from Studio 1A in the immediate future, he has a clear vision of what he wants his legacy to be – simply make a lasting impact entertaining millions across the country.

“People, when they watch, that they didn’t feel like I wasted their time. And that hopefully they felt better after watching than before,” Roker concluded.
