Rhode Island AI task force report calls for state to embrace, lead in AI use

A new report calls for Rhode Island to harness artificial intelligence for its benefit in the near future.
The “blueprint for Rhode Island to lead nationally in responsible, inclusive AI adoption” is the product of an AI task force appointed by Gov. Dan McKee with an executive order in 2024.
“As AI becomes a core driver of competitiveness and innovation, Rhode Island has a motivating force to prepare its workforce, institutions, and infrastructure for the opportunities and challenges ahead,” the 75-page report released Wednesday states.
The findings recommend a focus on using AI in education, manufacturing, defense and maritime industries, finance, health, government and small business.
For education, the report recommends “incentivizing the implementation of vetted AI-integration education tools” and creating a standard framework for use of AI throughout public education, including implementing AI-focused curriculum by 2030.
The report calls for increasing use of AI in learning to help students and driving workforce training in AI as employers are seeking workers with AI skills.

The task force claims AI can improve Rhode Island government by “automating citizen interactions, modernizing decades-old records, and using predictive analytics to guide disaster response, traffic flow, and law-enforcement resources.”
To do so, though, would require building in-state data infrastructure, according to the report.
