'Stay off the roads:' Virginia State Police respond to 440 crashes during winter storm

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (7News) — Virginia State Police (VSP) said the weekend winter storm has led to hundreds of crashes across the Commonwealth, prompting officials to urge drivers to stay off the roads.
As of 4 a.m. Monday, the Virginia State Police responded to 440 crashes statewide. Thirty-four of those crashes involved injuries.
Police also confirmed one fatal crash in Fairfax County; however, VSP said the weather is not being considered a factor in that crash.

In a message to drivers, Virginia State Police warned that winter conditions continue to make travel dangerous and advised motorists to avoid driving until at least 10 a.m.
Breakdown by division:
- Division 1 (Central Va./Richmond) – 93 crashes, 3 with injuries
- Division 2 (Northwest Va./Winchester/Harrisonburg) – 38 crashes, 4 with injuries
- Division 3 (Central/Western Va./Appomattox) – 46 crashes, 6 with injuries
- Division 4 (Southwest Va.) – 59 crashes, 5 with injuries
- Division 5 (Hampton Roads) –109 crashes, 9 with injuries
- Division 6 (Western Va./Roanoke) – 54 crashes, 5 with injuries
- Division 7 (Northern Va.) – 41 crashes, 2 with injuries, one fatal crash (not weathe related, occurred in Fairfax County Saturday evening)
Officials are asking drivers who must be on the roads to give the Virginia Department of Transportation plows and emergency crews extra space as they work to clear roadways.
