Trump's Iowa visit draws GOP support, but opponents plan to protest

DES Moines, Iowa (KGAN) — One year into his second term as President and Donald Trump is making another trip to Iowa. He's scheduled to speak at an event Tuesday in Central Iowa.
We're expecting him to talk about energy and the economy.
"Iowans voted overwhelmingly to return President Trump to the White House to lower costs for families, to secure the border, and to bring down crime," Sen. Chuck Grassley said. "Since then, Republicans have been delivering on those promises."
However, Congress's failure to pass legislation for year-round E15 lead two Iowa groups to ask for the president's help in getting it passed.
The Iowa Corn Growers Association and Iowa's Renewable Fuels Association sent an open letter to the president.
"We are at a breaking point," the two groups wrote. "Without immediate policy intervention to create new demand, we are looking at an avoidable decline in Iowa’s rural economy. The most effective, zero-cost solution is the immediate authorization of nationwide, year-round E15. Removing the outdated regulatory hurdle for E15 is exactly the type of government efficiency you’ve worked for. This change would allow retailers to offer lower-cost E15 to customers. No one is required to sell it, nor is there any taxpayer money involved."
Many of the state's top GOP leaders are expected to join President Trump on Tuesday. Iowa's News Now has confirmed Gov. Kim Reynolds, Rep. Zach Nunn, Rep. Ashley Hinson and others will be at the event.
GOP Congressman Zach Nunn posted on X they'll be celebrating the work Trump has done over the past year and lay out a vision for 2026.
"America 2026 marks the 250th birthday of our nation and there is a lot to be excited about," Rep. Nunn said. "I'm celebrating by bringing President Donald Trump right here to the heart of the heartland."
However, not everyone is celebrating his return to the state with some pushing back over controversial orders of ICE deportations.
"I believe that Iowa does not want Trump in our state and more so over we want Trump to take accountability and the actions that he has done that has led to the innocent lives being taken in Minnesota," State Rep. Angel Ramirez (D- Cedar Rapids) said.
A protest is scheduled to take place outside of where the president is scheduled to speak. They're calling for "ICE out of everywhere" and justice for those killed or harmed by the federal agents.
"I fully support people exercising their freedom of speech to protest a president that has wreaked havoc on our country," Rep. Ramirez said.
