Trump touts 'booming' economy during speech in Iowa as midterms loom
WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump visited Clive, Iowa Tuesday afternoon as the administration ramps up its affordability and economy tour ahead of the midterms in November.
Trump focused on a few specific topics, including energy policy, tax relief and reducing costs. Taking a victory lap in front of the thousands in attendance.
But today after just one-year of President Trump, our economy is booming, incomes are rising, investment is soaring, inflation has been defeated. Our border is closed, totally closed," Trump said.
Trump claimed to have personally brought down grocery prices, despite recent Consumer Price Index data showing prices went up 2.4% year over year. He also dismissed concerns from Democrats about affordability. Telling the crowd everything is on the line come November.
If we lose the midterms, you'll lose so many of the things that we're talking about, so many of the assets that we're talking about, so many of the tax cuts that we're talking about. And it would lead to very bad things. We've got to win the midterms," said Trump.
The stop in Iowa follows similar visits in Pennsylvania and Michigan. All battleground states Trump won in 2024. But a recent New York Times-Siena poll shows falling approval ratings, amid rising concerns about inflation and affordability. 57% of Americans say Trump is focused on the wrong issues and 51%, that Trump's policies have made life less affordable.
Aside from the economy, Trump also focused on energy policy on Tuesday. Touting his initiative to let tech companies build their own private power plants, announcing he's considering federal caps on state gas taxes and that he's working with Congressional leaders to allow year-round use of E15 ethanol.
To find a deal that works for farmers, consumers and refiners including small and mid-sized refiners. In other words, to get E15 approved. They're working on it and very close to getting it done," said Trump.
Trump is also discussing agriculture as thousands of Iowa farmers navigate a difficult landscape, in part, due to the administration's trade and economic policies. Trump said Tuesday that, despite his tariffs just kicking in, they would pay off in the long run.
Your agricultural products had trade barriers that didn't allow them to be sold in countries that are now saying please, we'd love to accept your product. So that's great. You're going to start seeing it kick in now for the farmers," Trump said.
President Trump's visit to Iowa kicked off his new, weekly trips to swing states and key battlegrounds ahead of the midterms. The White House has not yet announced the location of his next visit.
