President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order Thursday afternoon to ramp up the federal government's response to drug addiction and substance abuse, according to an exclusive report by CBS News.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the report in a post on the social media platform X.

The outlet said the White House fact sheet will assist agencies in directing funds to support addiction recovery.

Funds will help agencies with programs in all aspects of drug recovery, including prevention, intervention, treatment, recovery and reentry.

According to the White House, 40.7 million adults with a substance abuse disorder did not receive the treatment they needed in 2024 and 95.6% did not know they needed the treatment.

The initiative will be chaired by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Kathryn Burgum, who is married to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
