Rubio reveals tactics to avoid being caught napping by Trump on Air Force One flights
(TNND) — Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that he makes great attempts to avoid being caught taking a nap by President Donald Trump during long overseas flights on Air Force One.
In an interview, Rubio told New York Magazine that Trump never sleeps on the plane and could walk around patrolling the cabin at any moment.
“There’s an office with two couches,” Rubio told the outlet. “I cocoon myself in a blanket. I cover my head. I look like a mummy.”
Rubio said he does not want Trump to think he is sleeping on the job. However, Rubio admits that he needs sleep with the multiple roles he juggles for the president.
“At some point on the flight, he’s going to emerge from the cabin and start prowling the hallways to see who is awake,” Rubio said of the president.
“I want him to think it’s a staffer who fell asleep,” he joked. “I don’t want him to see his secretary of State sleeping on a couch and think, Oh, this guy is weak.”
Trump’s ability to stay awake through the late hours of the night and early hours of the morning is a trend that has continued since his first term. The president’s sleep habits have been well-documented by his frequent late night, early morning social media posts.
The president has often boasted about getting little sleep, once telling supporters during a 2016 campaign: “I’m not a big sleeper. I like three hours, four hours, I toss, I turn, I beep-de-beep, I want to find out what’s going on.”
