Portland police arrest four during ICE protest following deadly Minneapolis shooting
PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Portland police officers arrested four people during a protest in South Portland on Saturday following the shooting and killing of a man in Minneapolis by a federal agent earlier in the day.
Hundreds of people gathered for a rally at Elizabeth Caruthers Park and marched over to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, calling for an end to immigration enforcement and for the city of Portland to revoke the permit of the ICE building.
Protesters banged on the walls of the building while chanting.
Federal agents shot pepper balls and other munitions.
KATU was told the protest that started at Elizabeth Caruthers Park was organized within the hour of the deadly shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti in Minneapolis.
"It's disgusting. It's abysmal. It's anti-American,” said Sulwyn de Crozuc, a protester in Portland hit by a flash bang canister. “We have a First Amendment right to peacefully protest and to assemble, and we've been -- sure, we've been screaming, sure we have our little signs, but it's just -- it's disgusting; it's completely un-American. We should be able to assemble in front of a federal building and give our peace of mind without being assaulted by less-than-lethal weapons."
Prior to the protest on Saturday night, Portland police posted on X, saying anyone who tampers with or barricades the doors to the ICE facility could face arrest and/or use of force.
Portland police said they arrested 29-year-old Jamie Hindery, of Hillsboro, and 77-year-old Marvin Simmons, of Banks, for interfering with their patrol vehicle while driving through the area before the rally began. Hindery and Simmons face second-degree disorderly conduct charges.
At 6:45 p.m., officers arrested 30-year-old Evalynn Kotasek, of Portland, accusing her of trying to pry off plywood from the ICE building.
Police also arrested Reginald Macrae, 52, of Milwaukie, accusing him of throwing glass candles at federal officers.
Police said to date officers have made 86 arrested related to ICE protests.
Portland’s protest was just one of many nationwide on Saturday.
