Party crasher accused of punching Florida congressman at Sundance Film Festival
PARK CITY, UT (CBS12) — Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost was allegedly punched and threatened in a racially motivated attack at a Sundance Film Festival party.
Congressman Frost described the incident in a post on X, saying he was assaulted and told the president was going to deport him.
According to Variety, the man allegedly startled others in the bathroom by boasting about being “white” before later punching Frost after leaving the area.
Frost, the first Gen Z lawmaker in Congress, thanked venue security and the Park City Police Department for their assistance.
Police later identified the suspect as 28-year-old Christian Joel Young, who was located and arrested on charges of aggravated burglary, assaulting an elected official, and assault.
In addition to the alleged attack on Frost, authorities say Young also grabbed a woman by the shoulder. According to the Associated Press, investigators believe Young entered the party by jumping a fence and using a Sundance Film Festival pass that was not issued to him.
"We strongly condemn last night’s assault and abhor any form of violence, harassment, and hate speech," the film festival wrote in a statement addressing the assault. "While the incident occurred at a non-Festival-affiliated event, such behavior is intolerable and against our values of upholding a welcoming and inspiring environment for all our attendees.”
