Olympic gold medalist charged with raping coach's 13-year-old daughter: prosecutor

COLMAR, France (WKRC) - A 2-time Olympic gold medalist was indicted on charges of rape and sexual assault against the 13-year-old daughter of his former coach, according to prosecutors.
Former French Olympic swimmer Yannick Agnel, 33, was ordered to go on trial after attempting to appeal the charges in May of 2025, according to the Associated Press.
The alleged incidents occurred in 2016 when Agnel was 24 while he was training with his swimming coach in Mulhouse, France, again in Rio de Janeiro during the 2016 Olympics, and twice more in Spain and Thailand. Agnel won two gold medals at the 2012 Olympics, and retired in 2016, AP reported.

Local outlet Le Monde reported that Agnel was arrested in 2021 after France passed a law that declared any sexual contact with a child under the age of 15 as rape. Although Agnel allegedly claimed the relationship was not forced, he was charged nonetheless.
"The facts constitute rape and sexual assault due to the age difference, because the justice system considers that there is genuine moral duress," public prosecutor Edwige Roux-Morizot said about the decision at the time.
Agnel reportedly met with the victim in 2024, who was now in her 20s, at his request.
