Man posing as FBI agent tries to free Luigi Mangione from Brooklyn jail, officials say
(TNND) — A man posing as an FBI agent attempted to bust the alleged UnitedHealthCare CEO killer, Luigi Mangione out of the Brooklyn jail holding center, according to law enforcement sources.
The man, who has been identified as 36-year-old Mark Anderson, allegedly walked into the intake section of the MDC Brooklyn jail on Wednesday night and handed over his Minnesota driver's license when officials asked for credentials.
When asked for a court order, Anderson showed them random documents, including a form detailing how to sue the Department of Justice (DOJ), according to officials.
Following the encounter, jail staff moved to apprehend him when he announced, "I have weapons in my bag." According to federal officials, jail staff found a barbecue fork and what looked to be a pizza cutter inside his backpack.
While Mangione is not named in the criminal complaint, sources told the New York Daily News that he is the inmate Anderson was trying to release.
Anderson's criminal records include arrests for charges such as petit larceny and menacing in the Bronx.
According to a law enforcement source, he had traveled to New York City for a job opportunity that did not work out, and ended up working at a pizzeria.
As of now, Anderson has been charged with impersonating an FBI agent and is slated to be arraigned in Brooklyn Federal Court on Thursday.
Mangione remains in jail as he faces federal and state prosecutions in the Dec. 4, 2024 killing of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson.
Jury selection in his federal criminal case is expected to begin on Sept. 8, with testimony to begin in October of this year or in January of 2027, depending on how the judge rules on Mangione's request to bar federal prosecutors from seeking the death penalty.
