Driver narrowly misses trooper and deputy on Florida highway
FLORIDA (FOX26) — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper and a Volusia County deputy narrowly escaped injury last week when a driver drifted onto the shoulder of Interstate 95, nearly hitting them.
Both officers had their emergency lights on and were wearing reflective vests.
"We were lit up like a Christmas tree," the trooper said. "And she still came right at us."
The trooper and the sergeant jumped into a ditch as the vehicle sideswiped their patrol cars and crashed across the interstate.
The incident underscores the importance of Move Over laws, which require drivers to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles.
"People tell me they 'didn't know,' but every state has a Move Over law. It's the same everywhere — move over or slow down," the trooper said.
Violating the law results in fines, fees, and points on a driving record.
