Southern New England celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day with numerous events

Numerous communities in Southern New England will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

This marks 40 years since the holiday was first observed nationally.

The day also serves as a call to action, inspiring people to volunteer for service projects to improve their community, continuing Dr. King's legacy.

In Cranston, Ministers Alliance of Rhode Island held a Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast.

The event, which celebrates the life and work of King, put emphasis on the importance of education and empowering the next generation.

Several Rhode Island students were recognized.

Speakers also stressed the importance of immigrants, and all they've done in our country's history.

Attleboro is holding a celebration starting at 1 p.m. at Attleboro City Hall.

That will be followed by an interfaith service at Central Congregational Church in North Attleboro.

In Newport, the NAACP is hosting a day of activities.

And things will be capped off with a "historical enlightenment" at the Community Baptist Church Annex in Newport at 3 p.m.

Gov. Dan McKee and other state leaders are set to appear at the state’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Providence starting at 4 p.m.
