City and state leaders packed the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority's new transit passenger amenity building in Pawtucket to celebrate its opening.

It's a place that has been in the works for years at the Pawtucket-Central Falls station and it's now open for use.

The brand-new passenger amenity building means good-bye to the days of people waiting outside for their bus in the cold or the rain-- now, there is now a designated spot just for them.

Gov. Dan McKee said $5 million went towards this project in the budget.

The amenity building features an information center, waiting room, and public bathrooms along with security which will be present during open house.

Leaders also said it will have a positive impact on other needs in the community like affordable housing.

"With the additional houses, they estimate a thousand additional houses to be built here in Pawtucket over the next several years that's going to reduce the cost of housing. This is about affordability and it's also about efficiency, getting people to work, recreation , and getting around," U.S. Sen. Jack Reed said.

The building will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Security will be present during those hours.
