Why Claire Danes had a 'meltdown' when she got pregnant at 44 with her third child

Claire Danes wasn’t expecting to get pregnant at 44 years old.

The “Beast in Me” actress already had two kids, Cyrus and Rowan, when a pregnancy test came up positive, prompting her to call her doctor. "I called my OB/GYN in convulsive tears,” she told Amy Poehler on the “Good Hang” podcast. “It was all meltdown.”

Danes hadn’t been trying for a third kid, nor did she think it was an option for her. "None of this was by design. I didn't know it was physically possible. I was 44. And actually, Rowan was very hard-earned. I had to do two rounds of IVF," she said.

In fact, the Emmy winner admitted she had researched the odds of "naturally conceiving" at her age and found there was less than a one percent chance.

Of course, today, Danes is thrilled to have a daughter. “This beautiful girl emerged and she’s the best. None of this was up to me and I’m just delighted,” she told Poehler before adding, “But she was disruptive. We had to move. It was a thing.”

This wasn’t the first time Danes discussed her late-in-life pregnancy on a podcast. Two months ago, she told the “Smartless” hosts she never expected to have kids so far apart in age. “There’s about five years between each. But it’s a trip. I mean, I have a teenager and a toddler at once,” she said.
