Patrick Dempsey says 'Grey’s' co-star Eric Dane’s ALS is preventing onscreen reunion
Patrick Dempsey wants to work with his “Grey’s Anatomy” co-star Eric Dane again, but unfortunately Dane’s health is making it “virtually impossible.”

“I spoke to him a few weeks ago. I’ve been texting with him,” Dempsey told Parade.
Dempsey stars in the new Fox series “Memory of a Killer” and very much wanted his former co-star to make an appearance.
“We were trying to get him in [Memory of a Killer], but unfortunately, the progression of his disease made it virtually impossible. But I was happy to see that he was here in Toronto working on, I think, another medical drama [Brilliant Minds].”
Dane announced his ALS diagnosis last year, a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and atrophy.

He did make a guest appearance on NBC’s “Brilliant Minds” in November playing "a heroic firefighter who struggles to share his ALS diagnosis with his family,” according to a description from the network.
“It’s very hard for him, but I do try to stay in touch and see how he’s doing,” Dempsey said. “I think he’s been incredibly courageous in the face of this horrible disease.”
“He’s such a wonderful human being,” he continued. “He has such a great sense of humor, and he’s so intelligent. I’ve always enjoyed working and being around Eric.”
The actor went on to call Dane’s condition “heartbreaking” for him and his family.

“You feel for them when you see this terrible disease and how quickly it attacks the body,” the “Enchanted” star said. “But he’s bringing a lot of light to that, and he’s using his platform in a positive way. I wish him the best.”
Dane’s health has had impacts on other planned appearances, including a “Grey’s Anatomy” reunion at the Emmys last fall and a recent charity gala where he was set to be honored with advocate of the year by the ALS Network’s Champions for Cures and Care Gala.
