The “Little House on the Prairie” star, 61, voiced her support for Busfield after he turned himself in to authorities on Jan.13 after an arrest warrant was issued by the Albuquerque Police Department, alleging that he engaged in unlawful sexual conduct with two boys. The “West Wing” actor, 68, has been charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and one count of child abuse. The case remains ongoing, and the allegations have not been proven in court.

In a personal letter, Gilbert described Busfield as her “love” and “rock,” emphasizing the central role he plays in her life. She portrayed him as a compassionate and principled man, writing that he possesses “the strongest moral compass of any human I have ever known” and begins each day with kindness and service to others.

Gilbert, who married Busfield in 2013, also reflected on his relationship with her youngest son, Michael, now 30, who she shares with ex-husband Bruce Boxleitner. She recalled how Busfield became a steady presence during Michael’s turbulent teenage years, crediting him with offering guidance, discipline, affection, and emotional support. Gilbert said watching that bond develop has been “one of the great joys” of her life.

“Michael was a teenager when Tim and I got together. A full-blown, angst-ridden teenager trying to figure out his place in the world,” she wrote.

"Tim nurtured and guided Michael. He admonished, praised, loved, consoled, cajoled, fretted, cared for, and fed my son both physically and spiritually. I will never be able to express the depth of gratitude I have to God for bringing this wonderful human into our lives."

Acknowledging the unusual and painful circumstances, Gilbert described the message as “the strangest letter I’ve ever had to write.” She admitted struggling to balance logic with overwhelming emotion as she addressed the court.

In closing, Gilbert made a direct plea to the judge, asking that Busfield be protected while incarcerated. “Please take care of my sweet husband. As he is my protector, I am his, but I cannot protect him now and I think that, more than anything else, is what is truly breaking my heart. I am relying on you to protect him for me.”
