Eating as much Key Lime Pie as possible is a perfectly good reason to make a trip to Key West, Florida, right?

Key West is known for many things, but the thing that really excites us? Pie. So Amazing America’s Luke Morris (@notyourgovteacher) went out on a very important assignment: Eat an unreasonable amount of Key Lime Pie and report back.

Six stops and six slices later, here’s how Key West’s most iconic dessert stacked up, from chocolate-dipped slices on a stick to mile-high meringue-topped masterpieces.

Blue Heaven

The meringue on the Key Lime Pie at Blue Heaven stands so tall, one could say it almost reaches, well, heaven. It’s not all show, though. The flavor, freshness and quality of the pie spoke for itself, collecting a rating of nine out of ten. This vibrant, beachy restaurant has received quite a bit of media coverage, but they still maintain the laid-back, friendly attitude synonymous with Key West.

Key West Key Lime Pie Company

A slice of Key Lime Pie dipped in chocolate and served on a stick? Immediate yes. The sweet chocolate balances out the pie’s tartness, and eating something on a stick is obviously more fun. This earned a seven out of ten rating, while the mini pie received a six out of ten — it was a bit mouth-puckering. Fun fact: The Key West Key Lime Pie Company uses a 100-year-old recipe, and they also offer pie making classes.

Address: 511 Greene St., Key West, FL 33040

Open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

La Grignote Cafe & Bakery

With a crust containing what tasted like a pound of butter, how could the Key Lime Pie at La Grignote Cafe & Bakery possibly be bad? This French artisan bakery and cafe serves breakfast and lunch as well as tons of stunning pastries, and the Key Lime Pie was something to write home about, receiving a seven out of ten rating.

Address: 1211 Duval St., Key West, FL 33040

Open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Baby’s Coffee

Operating since 1991, Baby’s Coffee sits right off of U.S. Highway 1 and claims the title of “Southernmost Coffee Roasters in America.” Their key lime pie is served frozen, custard-style in a cup, and would probably have been better enjoyed had it been given a few more minutes to thaw, but when hunger struck, all bets were off. It was still tasty, just very cold and a bit difficult to eat, earning it a rating of six out of ten.

Address: 3180 US Hwy 1 Mile Marker 15, Key West, FL 33040

Open daily from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Key West Cuban Coffee

Passionfruit sets Key West Cuban Coffee’s Key Lime Pie apart, in a uniquely delicious way. Digging into a slice and sipping a cup of hot Cuban coffee in this friendly local-approved joint was heartwarming and satisfying, garnering a rating of eight out of ten.

Address: 517 Truman Ave, Key West, FL 33040

Open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Moondog Cafe & Bakery

With a prime location just a few doors down from The Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, this breakfast & lunch spot won our hearts. The fun, vibrant atmosphere, friendly people and, of course, incredibly delicious meringue-topped Key Lime Pie led Moondog Cafe & Bakery to clinch a rating of one million out of ten. Yeah, it’s just that good.

Address: 823 Whitehead St., Key West, Florida 33040

Open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

After many bites, some tartness-induced face scrunches and a questionable amount of meringue, one thing is clear: There’s really no such thing as bad Key Lime Pie in Key West — just different variations of delicious.

Whether it’s frozen, over-the-top, chocolate-covered or strictly traditional, Key West serves up a slice for every kind of sweet tooth. So consider this your official excuse to order dessert first, plan your stops around bakeries and cafes, and conduct your own highly scientific taste test. Tough job, but someone has to do it!
