Amazing Itineraries explores Colorado’s Phoenix Gold Mine
IDAHO SPRINGS, CO (Amazing America TV) — When most of us think of winter, we think it’s time to hunker down, put the soup on a slow simmer, turn on the TV, and wait until the spring thaw comes.
But not Amazing America’s Hunter Hulbert. He hit the road in Colorado for a winter wonderland road trip.
On Day 2 of his Amazing Itineraries Colorado Adventure, he heads underground to the Phoenix Gold Mine in Idaho Springs, Colorado, in search of a priceless experience.
The Phoenix Gold Mine is owned by the Mosch family, fourth-generation Colorado gold miners who bought the mine in 1968. Twenty years later, after it became too expensive to continue mining, they decided to share their love of prospecting with others by offering public tours.
The mine dates back to 1871 and has produced an estimated 100,000 troy ounces of gold - the equivalent of more than $460 million if it were sold today.
For amateur gold diggers, a troy ounce is a unit of weight that is used for precious metals like gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.
The guided, hard hat–requiring mine tour takes visitors through a web of well-lit tunnels that show at least two veins of gold embedded in the rock. Gold-panning lessons are offered, and visitors can even pan for gold in a creek. If you don’t strike gold, you can at least pick up a nice souvenir in the gift shop.
Stay tuned as Hunter continues his Amazing Itineraries adventure with more stops.
