Virginia US attorney Lindsey Halligan is leaving her position after failed indictments
WASHINGTON (TNND) — Virginia U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan, who unsuccessfully indicted both Letitia James and James Comey, is leaving her position.
The announcement was made by Attorney General Pam Bondi on the social media platform X. Halligan was originally named to her position as a temporary Acting US Attorney in September.
On Tuesday, Bondi said her "120-day tenure" has come to an end.
"The circumstances that led to this outcome are deeply misguided,” Bondi said in a social media post on X announcing Halligan's departure. “We are living in a time when a democratically elected President's ability to staff key law enforcement positions faces serious obstacles.”
This comes after the cases of both Comey and James that Halligan attempted to prosecute were thrown away after a judge ruled Halligan was appointed "illegally." Although the Trump administration was ready to appeal her appointment, two separate judges ruled that she had no legal authority to prosecute in the indictments.
During the prosecution, Halligan received accusations that the cases were mishandled. She called such accusations "personal attacks."
The cases were encouraged by President Donald Trump, who wrote that James was "guilty as hell" and Halligan was a "really good lawyer."
