Florida police defends sending detectives to woman's house over FB post critical of mayor

The police chief of Miami Beach issued a statement last week and defended detectives going to the home of an activist in Florida over a social media comment she wrote that was critical of the mayor.

The video of the incident went viral on the social media platform, X, of a woman filming detectives coming to her house to ask her about her “inflammatory” social media post about Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner.

The Facebook comment from the account Raquel Pacheco reads, “The guy who consistently calls for the death of all Palestinians, tried to shut down a theater for showing a movie that hurt his feelings, and REFUSES to stand up for the LGBTQ community in any way (even leaves the room when they vote on related matters) wants you to know that you’re all welcome here.”

In the video posted, a detective shows Pacheco the Facebook comment and asked if that was her account.

“I refuse to answer questions without my lawyer present,” she answered.

The detective said she wasn’t going to jail, but “the concerning part for the person who’s posting itwe’re just trying to prevent if somebody else getting agitated or agreeing with the statement.”

Mayor Meiner, who is Jewish, has not called for the death of all Palestinians, according to the Miami Herald.

Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones gave a statement on Friday about why detectives were sent to Pacheco’s home.

“Given the real, ongoing national and international concerns surrounding antisemitic attacks and recent rhetoric that has led to violence against political figures, I directed two of my detectives to initiate a brief, voluntary conversation regarding certain inflammatory, potentially insightful false remarks made by a resident to ensure there was no immediate threat to the elected official or the broader community that might emerge as a result of the post,” Jones said in a press release.

“The interaction was handled professionally and without incident.”

The viral video was weighed in on by conservatives. Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly weighed in, and just said “wtf.”

Florida GOP gubernatorial candidate James Fishback said he spoke to Pacheco and defends the First Amendment.

“This woman is a proud veteran who bravely served in the National Guard from 1993 to 1999,” he said in a statement. “She has called Miami Beach home for 15 years ago. She is a Democrat. I am a Republican. We might disagree on issues here and there, but she and I agree that every American, black or white, rich or poor, Christian, Muslim, or Jew, has an inalienable right to free speech.”
