Crews battle worsening conditions as snowstorm blankets Rhode Island

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WJAR) — Gov. Dan McKee said Sunday morning that Rhode Island is "mobilized and ready" to respond to an approaching snowstorm.
Storm Team 10 said snow will continue throughout the night into the early morning hours.
In North Kingstown, snow was falling at a rapid rate Sunday afternoon into the evening, with plow drivers doing their best to keep up with the storm.
Few drivers were on the roads, particularly past nightfall as visibility worsened.
Still, local gas stations were quite a common stop for snow removal workers as they worked to clean roads, driveways and parking lots.
"We've got four-wheel drive, the snow is definitely coming down, road conditions are poor, so it's good for everyone to stay off the roads and let everyone out here do their job,” said Eric Plummer.
Many roads and streets remain dangerous for travel as crews work to clean them up.
McKee held a briefing at the Rhode Island Department of Transportation's maintenance facility in Smithfield, where he met with snowplow drivers.
The state has instituted a truck ban on state roads beginning at noon Sunday and staying in place until further notice. It applies to tractor-trailers, tankers, special permitted vehicles, RVs, box trucks, tandems and vehicles pulling trailers.
He urged all people to stay off the roads for their own safety and to give room to plow drivers to do their work.
McKee said the state's emergency operations center was activated.
The governor said anyone in need of shelter during the storm should call 211 for options.
Mayor Brett Smiley called into NBC 10 News to discuss the overnight snow and what the week ahead will look like for the capitol city.
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority said Sunday that 11 routes were on detour: 13, 14, 21, 22, 30, 55, 56, 60, 63, 66, and 92.
The authority also said that all services would be suspended at 7:30 p.m.
"Riders may expect some delays on all routes due to weather conditions and are advised to use extreme caution at bus stops due to decreased visibility and slippery conditions," RIPTA said.
Additionally, RIPTA said all Park & Ride service on Routes 9x, 10x, 12x, 14, 24L, 59x, 61x, 65x, and 95x was canceled Monday.
- STORM TEAM 10: Forecast
Air traffic at Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport was virtually non-existent Sunday.
"The overwhelming majority of today’s departures and arrivals at Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport have been cancelled," a spokesman said. "While snowfall has only just begun in Rhode Island, the storm’s widespread impact across the country has resulted in thousands of flight cancellations nationwide, including cancellations now extending into Monday."
The airport said anyone planning to fly should check with their airline before heading to the airport.
"Travelers should be aware that it may take several days for flight operations to fully recover across the United States," the statement said.
