In Fall River 24/7 warming shelters are helping give people a place to go in the frigid temperatures hitting Southern New England.

Overnight, they’re staying at the First Step Inn, an emergency and transitional shelter which has set up a temporary overflow space in a conference room.

During the day, people were able to visit Christ the Rock Church where snacks, meals, water and items like hand warmers and mittens were available.

This is largely due to the generosity of local businesses and nonprofits who made donations to help keep everyone warm.

Pastor Erica Canavan said she's grateful for those efforts.

"It's very important, it's things that we take for granted," she said. "We go outside, we have hats, gloves, scarves and we’re comfortable, but a lot of the people that come see us, a lot of their gloves have holes in them, they don't have pants or boots that get them through this cold weather, so it really is essential for their survival to have these necessities that we take for granted."

As the snowy weather begins to roll in, the church warming shelter will be open once again.
