The shooting suspect is described as a white man in his mid-30s, with facial hair. The suspect could have a knife and handgun, and is considered dangerous.

If you see him, call 9-1-1.

The incident started at about 8:20 p.m. with reports of someone threatening another person with a knife near to Northeast 21st Avenue and Clackamas Street.

Two officers found the suspect a few blocks away, along Clackamas between 16th and 17th avenues. The suspect opened fire during the encounter.

One of the officers was shot twice, while the other suffered one gunshot wound. They were both rushed to the hospital.

The suspect ran off, and police immediately set up a perimeter. Officers scoured the area for several hours, using drones and canine officers to help in the search.

"The suspect [has a] black baseball cap, black jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and black shoes," Portland Police said. "He was also seen with a black backpack and a green shopping bag."

Just after 5:30 a.m. the following morning, police said they had concluded the search for the suspect in the Sullivan's Gulch neighborhood, but had not found him.

Portland Police has kept a heavy presence in the neighborhood as they continue to search for the shooter.

“I know the fear and uncertainty you’re feeling right now is very real,” said Deputy Chief Chris Gjovik to those living in the area. “While we haven’t apprehended the suspect responsible, we want to assure you that we have dedicated homicide detectives and officers assigned to this case, and we will pursue all leads.”

Police declined to say late Monday night whether any officers fired their weapons.

Nearly 90 police units responded on Monday night, and Police Chief Bob Day said every available resource the bureau had went to the scene.

According to Broadcastify, a service that records dispatch audio, one of the officers was shot in the leg, and the other was shot in the arm and the ear. Police did not confirm that information.

RECORDED LIVESTREAM BELOW:

Police asked people in the area to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors locked. They also asked people to contact them if they had any related video.

"Days like this, and evenings like this are very emotional," Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said during a news conference shortly after 11 p.m. "This is a stark reminder of the dangers of the job. ... We're very concerned for the officers who were shot. We are happy to hear that they are in stable condition, and we wish them a speedy recovery, and we send them our prayers."

Day said before he came out to the scene, he stopped by the hospital.

"Every time that we've spoken about critical incidents here in town, we always emphasize the sanctity of life, and that is certainly paramount for me tonight, this evening, as I think about our officers, how grateful I am to know that they are in stable condition."
