A man arrested in Florida is now facing murder charges in connection with a deadly shooting in West Ashley earlier this month, and state records show he has a lengthy criminal history in South Carolina that includes felony gun convictions and multiple parole violations.

Charleston police say 28-year-old Ashlyn Brianna Burkett was shot and killed just after midnight on Jan. 10 at a home on Tripe Street in West Ashley.

Officers responded to reports of shots being fired and found Burkett dead at the scene. Police have not released a motive but confirmed the shooting involved a firearm.

Investigators identified Antonio Jamal Kelly as a suspect.

Police say Kelly fled South Carolina following the shooting and was later located and arrested in Jacksonville, Florida, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service. He is now facing a murder charge in Charleston County, along with a charge for possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Authorities say he is awaiting extradition back to South Carolina.

Court and police records show Kelly was already wanted on a domestic violence charge at the time of the shooting. That case stems from a May 2025 incident at the same Tripe Street address, where a woman told police she was assaulted during a child custody exchange.

Investigators documented injuries and obtained an arrest warrant for third-degree domestic violence months before the homicide.

A background check through the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) shows Kelly’s criminal history dates back more than a decade and includes multiple convictions involving firearms and drugs. Records indicate Kelly has been convicted of felony possession of a firearm as a prohibited person, served prison sentences, including a 32-month term, and has had multiple probation and parole revocations, resulting in repeated returns to custody.

SLED records also state that Kelly is prohibited by federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition due to his prior felony convictions.

Police emphasize that while Kelly has a documented criminal history, he has not been convicted in the homicide case and is presumed innocent. Investigators say the case remains active, and additional details could be released as the investigation continues.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support Ashlyn Burkett’s children as her family grieves her death. The fundraiser is intended to help cover immediate expenses and provide long-term support for her kids.
